I leave papers on a desk and when I return a day, two days, or a week later, they are exactly where I left them. So that is cool.
When our children were babies, I at once sensed the strength of their will and their autonomy and from that time forward I always tried to honor that reality. Now that our daughters are gone and living hundreds of miles away, I feel very close to them because I continue to understand and value that essence of their independent souls. I am happy for them as they forge their paths out in the world. My wife feels the same way, but she will fret if they let more than ten days go by without giving us a call.
